Rolls Royce Phantom II Short Chassis
Chassis number 61XJ was originally ordered on the 15th of October 1929 via Car Mart Ltd of Park Lane London. It was ordered to compliment the weight of a Weymann sporting saloon. The first owner was a Captain Leslie George Wylde, who at the time was well known for his superb taste in attractive and sporting motorcars.
After Wylde had grown tired of 61XJ it passed through a small handful of owners and was modified for each accordingly. The owners at this time seemed to use the car sparingly hence its still fairly low mileage. In 1947 61XJ was commissioned for storage and remained so for some thirty years. We believe that this careful storage is what kept the body in such remarkable condition, for 61XJ still retains the original fabric as fitted at the factory.
After re - commissioning 61XJ was used for small and touring events. In mid 2003 Alpine Eagle were commissioned to obtain 61XJ for a very good customer Captain Bill Borchert Larson. He affectionately named the car ‘The Captain’ due to the overwhelming presence and authority that 61XJ has wherever it goes. After the condition of 61XJ was assessed it was decided that the car would have a no holds barred restoration to exacting standards. Upon the 10 month restoration costing in excess of £250,000 and every component having received a nut and bolt re - build, 61XJ was revealed at the 2004 RREC annual rally at which it won First for Elegance and First in class.
After passing to new ownership in 2007 61XJ was again entered into the 2008 RREC annual event and after some 4 years of restoration came a highly credible 2nd loosing only by a few points (due to not winding up and setting the clock!!!!) There is absolutely no question that 61XJ has been given the restoration that it deserves to world class standards. Even now we are sure 61XJ would not look out of place on the Pebble Beach lawns.
61XJ has always received a warm welcome where ever it goes and always has a stream of admirers. Having covered little more than 1000 miles since its most comprehensive restoration 61XJ is now ready for touring and showing events. 61XJ is offered for sale complete with a comprehensive original tool kit, fully detailed Motor Historica report, bills and details of restoration and original Nickel mascot. A wonderfully unique chance to own a fantastic piece of motoring history.
